Anatomy of a Compliant Pouch
There are many bags being marketed to Medical Dispensaries as “odor proof”. Most of these bags are made from a thin Polyethylene (PE) material. They are popular because they are cheap. Unfortunately, Polyethylene alone does not provide an effective air or moisture barrier. As a result, oxygen (and consequently the smell) and moisture escapes through the package, depleting the freshness, potency and water weight of the product inside.
A true odor proof bag, also referred to as a flat pack pouch, is made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE). The material is a tough, clear polymer that has exceptional moisture and gas barrier properties. PET is often used for food storage bags and will not transfer hazardous chemicals into the bag’s contents.
Although PET bags can be made thin, they are typically manufactured thicker than PE bags and are significantly stronger. Additionally, they are more transparent than similar PE bags, which tend to get cloudy as they get thicker. PET bags can also be constructed with multiple layers, including foils, and due to their thickness tend to have a much more secure and airtight zipper closure. Overall, PET bags offer significant advantages over PE bags, especially when it comes to the end-user’s perception of the quality. Consumers buy with their eyes and a quality package, all other things being equal, will always win out.
Child Resistant Pouches
IMPAK offers a variety of child proof pouches:
- Pharmaloc External Latch Pouch - Pouches with a special tab that requires two handed dexterity to open the package.
- Push-Pin CR Pouch - The sliding zipper has a pin that must be inserted to "unlock" contents.
- Retail Ready CR Pouch - This pouch has a thumb tab zipper that is easy for adults to open, but nearly impossible for children. No bulky closures or pull-tabs required; just a sophisticated press-to-close zipper.
- Single Dose with a Micro Tear Slit - A micro perforation near the corner helps adults tear the package open. Excellent scent and moisture protection.
